A Permit-to-Carry class is a state-approved training course that satisfies the legal requirement to apply for a concealed handgun carry permit. The classroom segment provides a clear overview of your state’s carry laws, including prohibited locations (schools, courthouses, posted businesses, etc.), proper procedures for traffic stops and law-enforcement encounters while carrying, differences between concealed and open carry, and requirements for out-of-state permit recognition. Particular emphasis is placed on the authorized use of deadly force—understanding when the law permits you to use a firearm to defend your life or the lives of others—and the serious aftermath of a deadly force incident, which includes immediately securing the scene, calling 911, providing only basic information to first responders, preserving evidence, cooperating with investigators, and preparing for potential grand jury review or criminal/civil proceedings.
The second portion of the class moves to the range for a live-fire qualification. Under direct instructor supervision, students demonstrate safe muzzle discipline and firearm handling, proper loading and unloading, accurate shooting at typical self-defense distances (usually 3–15 yards). Instructors offer real-time coaching to ensure each student meets the minimum proficiency standard. Upon successfully completing both the classroom instruction and range qualification, participants receive a signed training certificate that is submitted with their permit application to the local sheriff or issuing authority.
